Description
Overview
AVEVA licenses must be activated before they can be used. Activation verifies the authenticity of your license against AVEVA’s records and permanently links it to your License Server machine.
Online Activation is the simplest and fastest method. As long as your License Server machine has an active internet connection, the License Manager communicates directly with the AVEVA License Activation Server to complete the process automatically. No file transfers, no portable media, and no secondary machine are required.
This guide covers the full Online Activation process from start to finish.
Before You Begin
Make sure you have the following ready before starting:
Your AVEVA license purchase confirmation email – it contains a .zip attachment with your License Entitlement XML file inside.
A machine designated as your License Server – this is the computer where the license will be installed and activated.
An active internet connection on the License Server machine – required for the License Manager to communicate with the AVEVA License Activation Server.
NOTE Online Activation requires outbound internet access from the License Server. If your machine does not have internet access, refer to the Offline License Activation Guide instead.
Solution Details
Step 1 Prepare Your License Entitlement File
Open the purchase confirmation email you received from AVEVA. Save the .zip file attachment to your License Server machine and extract it. Inside you will find an XML file – this is your License Entitlement file. Save it to a location that is easy to find, such as your Desktop or Downloads folder. You will need to browse to it later in this process.
Step 2 Install AVEVA Software and Licensing Components
Run the AVEVA product installer on the License Server machine. When the feature selection screen appears, make sure all three licensing components are checked before proceeding:
AVEVA Enterprise Licensing Platform
AVEVA Enterprise License Manager
AVEVA Enterprise License Server
NOTE This guide assumes the License Server and License Manager are installed on the same machine. If your setup requires them on separate machines, the same steps apply – simply run each component on its appropriate machine.
Step 3 Configure the License Server Using the Configurator
After installation is complete, open the AVEVA Configurator from Start → AVEVA → Configurator. In the left-hand tree panel, expand AVEVA Enterprise Licensing Platform and select AVEVA Enterprise License Server.
In the License Server Configuration panel on the right, type your License Server computer name into the Primary Server Name field. Leave the Server Port (55555) and Agent Port (59200) at their default values unless your network requires different settings. Click Test Connection. When the Configuration Messages area at the bottom confirms the connection was successful, click Configure to save the settings and close the Configurator.
Step 4 Open the Enterprise License Manager
Launch the AVEVA Enterprise License Manager from Start → AVEVA → Enterprise License Manager. It will open in your default web browser at localhost/AELicenseManager and take you directly to the Servers page.
Step 5 Verify Online Activation Is Enabled
On the Servers page, your License Server will be listed as a card showing its name and status. Look at the cloud icon in the top-right corner of the page – this indicates the current activation mode:
Green check mark on the cloud – Online Activation is active. You are ready to proceed.
Red X on the cloud – Offline Activation is currently set. Click the hamburger menu icon (≡) in the top-left corner, select Activation Settings, choose Online Activation, then return to the Servers page.
NOTE The License Manager defaults to Online Activation. If this is a fresh installation you should see the green check mark already and no changes will be needed.

Step 6 Open the License Server and Click Add License
On the Servers page, click your License Server card to open its detail view. The License Summary tab will be displayed with an empty license list. Click the Add License button (⊕) in the toolbar. A License Activation panel will slide in from the right side of the screen.
Step 7 Browse for and Load Your Entitlement XML File
In the License Activation panel, click the … (ellipsis) button next to the Browse license file field. A Windows file browser will open. Navigate to the location where you saved the Entitlement XML file in Step 1. Select the file and click Open.
Once selected, the license details will load automatically into the panel. You will see the Component Name, Part Number, Serial Number, Activation Code, and available quantity for each license included in your entitlement.
Step 8 Select Your License and Click Activate
Check the box next to the license entry you wish to activate. A check mark will appear confirming it is selected. If your entitlement includes multiple seats and you want to activate more than one on this server, enter the desired number in the Quantity to Activate field.
When your selection is complete, click the Activate button. The License Manager will communicate directly with the AVEVA License Activation Server over the internet. After a brief pause, the activation will complete automatically.
NOTE Because Online Activation communicates directly with the AVEVA server, no files need to be saved or transferred. The process completes in seconds as long as the internet connection is stable.
Step 9 Confirm the License Is Activated
Once activation is complete, the License Activation panel will close and the license will appear in the License Summary list with a status of Activated. The Part Number, Serial Number, and Expiry Date will all be visible in the table. Your AVEVA software is now licensed and ready to use.
If the status shows an error instead of Activated, verify that your internet connection is stable and that outbound access to the AVEVA License Activation Server is not being blocked by a firewall or proxy. Then try the activation again.

Online vs. Offline Activation
The table below summarizes the key differences between the two activation methods to help you determine which is appropriate for your environment:
| Online Activation | Offline Activation | |
|---|---|---|
| Internet required on License Server | Yes | No |
| Second internet-connected machine needed | No | Yes |
| Portable media (USB drive) needed | No | Yes |
| File exchange required | No | Yes (send.sync and recv.sync) |
| Steps to complete | 9 | 20 |
| Time to complete | Under 5 minutes | 10–20 minutes |
