Server operating systems typically have sound disabled by default.  This example walks through enabling sound to annunciate alarms from an AVEVA InTouch HMI.  InTouch is running from a thin client.  The terminal in this case is configured from ThinManager as a workstation display client.  Server 2019 is the operating system for the workstation.

The first step is to enable audio playback redirection from the Local Group Policy Editor.  Search on gpedit from the Server 2019 workstation to open the following.  Navigate to Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Remote Desktop Services | Remote Desktop Session Host | Device and Resource Redirection.

Enable the Allow audio and video playback redirection setting.

Next, the Windows Audio is set to Manual and not running by default on server operating systems.  Open Services and scroll to the Windows Audio service.  Select and right-click the Windows Audio service to click on Properties.  Set the Startup Type to Automatic.  Click on the Start button and then click on the Ok button.

Copy the sound (.wav) files to the location referenced in the InTouch animation link or script.  Share the folder as required to allow access.  The application will play sounds when the alarm is triggered.
